- Criteria
- PATTERN
1. The general word for a pattern is wén 文.
2. Zhāng 章 is specifically a conspicuous pattern in red and white.
3. Lǐ 理 refers to patterns inherent in things.
- LAW
1. The current general word for a law, a legal system or any legal provision of any kind is fǎ 法.
2. Lu �律 is far more specialised as a specific term referring to concrete and detailed regulations rather than a legal system as a whole, and the word is also syntactically much less flexible. Thus we have 先王之法 and not 先王之律.
The complexities of legal terminology can be preliminarily summarised as follows:
A. The rule may be explicit (chéng 程, diǎn 典, fǎ 法, hào 號, lu �律 ); or it may be primarily conventional (cháng 常, jì 紀, jīng 經, zhì 制 ).
B. The rule may be conceived as temporary (lìng 令, dù 度, chéng 程, hào 號 ); or it may be conceived as permanent and unchangeable (cháng 常, diǎn 典, jì 紀, jīng 經 ); or it may be conceived as long-term but clearly changeable (fǎ 法, lu �律, xiàn 憲, zhāng 章, zhì 制 ).
C. The rules may concern legal and economic administration (chéng 程, diǎn 典, dù 度, lu �律, xiàn 憲, zhāng 章, zhì 制, and occasionally fǎ 法 ); or they may concern prohibitions of criminal conduct (fǎ 法, pì 辟, xíng 刑 ); or they may be general moral guidelines on conduct (cháng 常, hào 號, lìng 令, jì 紀 ).
D. The focus may be on the written documents containing the rules as such (diǎn 典, xiàn 憲, zhāng 章 ); or the focus may be on the content of the rules (cháng 常, chéng 程, dù 度, lìng 令, zhì 制 ); or the primary focus may be on oral promulgation of the rule (hào 號 ).
E. The rules may be regarded as a collective system (cháng 常, jì 紀, jīng 經, zhì 制 ); or they may be conceived as individual legal prescriptions (all others).
- CONCEAL
1. The current general word for hiding anything is yǐn 隱 (ant. xiǎn 顯 "display clearly") which refers to the hiding of anything, physically or intellectually.
2. Nì 匿 (ant. zhāng 章 / 彰 "make a display of") refers to the physical removal of things so as to make them inaccessible to others.
3. Cáng 藏 (ant. xiàn 見 ) adds to the notion of hiding that of safe keeping and collecting for use.
3. Fú 伏 (ant. chū 出 "come into the open") refers prinarily to hiding in a certain terrain.
4. Cuàn 竄 is incoative and refers to the action of going into hiding.
5. Yōu 幽 refers primarily to putting or leaving something in the dark and thus by extension to concealing it.
- MEMORIAL
1. The most general (rare) word for a memorial is shù 疏.
2. Zòu 奏 refers to the act of submission of a memorial, from Qin times onwards specifically directed to the emperor.
2. Biǎo 表 refers in Han times to a formal request for imperial support, often in matters of funeral arrangements etc.
3. Zhāng 章 refers to a memorial of thanks.
4. Yì 議 refers to formal and often controversial contribution towards the discussion of a political issue which is at issue.
5. Shū 書 "document; letter" is sometimes used to refer specifically to a memorial to the throne.
NB: The subtle distinctions between these forms of memorial are the subject of detailed discussion in Wénxīndiāolóng 文心雕龍, but the late date of this text must be kept in mind. Qǐ 啟 "expression of personal views addressed to the emperor" and zhuàng 狀 "formal accusation" are post-Han.

1. The general word is měi 美 "handsome and admirable" (ant. è 惡 "ugly") which refers to anything concrete or abstract which is attractive or handsome in a dignified way, and the word often retains its primary culinary sense of "tasty".

- SEAL
1. General word for the seal was originally xǐ 璽, and this could refer to the seals used both by officials and commoners, particularly traders. Originally, seals perhaps served mainly to the exchange of goods in Warring States times, but in the same period they came to be used by officials as a symbol of administrative authority. Official documents had to be all sealed with a piece of mud adhered on the cord tying up the document and impressed with an official seal. In the Han period, the word xǐ 璽 came to refer to the seals used by an Emperor and members of his family; these were usually made of jade.
2. Yìn 印 refers to the seals used by officials as a symbol of authority and also status in the bureaucratic hierarchy. The word began to be used in the Warring States period. Seals were worn tied to the waist (perhaps in a small sack; but there are also sealing fingerrings known from the Han period), were mostly of square shape, and material of which they were made expressed status of their holders. According to Han texts, the highest officials and aristocracy had golden seals, the lower silver, and minor officials had seals made of bronze.
3. Zhāng 章 is the word for the official seal which was used since Han times onwards.
4. Fēng ní 封泥 refers to the the piece of mud adhered on a document and impressed with a seal. The mud used for this purpose was worn in special tubes.
