Old Chinese Criteria
1. The general word for a shaman is wū 巫, and although this word was perceived to refer specifically to female shamans. 2. Xí 覡 is a rare word which seems to have been limited to male shamans in pre-Han times but came to be used generally for shamanes female and male alike, in post-Han times. 3. Zhù 祝 refers to the impersonator of the dead ancestor on sacrificial occasions: these are not really shamans, but they temporarily perform the roles of a shaman representing the dead or communicating with them.
