nominal compound consisting of a conjunction of N1 and N2 taken as synonymous

The words in this category are paraphrasable as "N1 id est N2", where the semantic difference between N1 and N2 is neutralised in the context. It is by no means a trivial question when this neutralisation has taken place and when it has not. A great deal of research remains to be done on exactly what distinguishes these NPs from their monosyllabic constitutents when the latter are used in the broader sense that Duan Yucai called 涽言 "the diffuse meaning".
