Old Chinese Criteria
1. The general word for the fur of animals is máo 毛. 2. Cuì 毳 refers specifically to the fine hair or down on the skin of animals or humans. 3. Máo 旄 refers specifically to the fine fur of calves, but the word is used generally for the fur of animals. 4. Háo 毫 refers to thin long hair and is (perhaps somewhat surprisingly) often used metaphorically for anything tiny.
