    MODERATION

    modus refers to a refusal to go to far or to exaggerate anything.

    modestia is the feeling of preference for modus.

    moderatio is the habit of acting in conformity with this feeling of modestia. It refers to moderation as springing from the unerstanding, forom calculation and reflection. It presupposes a conflict between the passions and reason, in which reason comes off conqueror.

    temperatio and temperantia are qualities of modestia and moderatio which pervade the whole person and ennoble his whole being, akin to sapientia.

    continentia refers to command over one's sensual desires.

    abstinentia refers to a sound command over one's desire for that which belongs to another, and firm integrity.

    verecundia refers to moderation out of regard to a person one is afraid to displease.

    vererentia is moderation out of deep respect for another person.

    pudor can refer to moderation out of self-respect, an inability to do what shame does not permit one to do.
