短而不窮，
直而不剛，
久而不忘者，
其唯繩乎！
故恩推則懦，
懦則不威；
嚴推則猛，
猛則不和；
愛推則縱，
縱則不令；
刑推則虐，
虐則無親。
昔者，
齊簡公釋其國家之柄，
而專任其大臣，
將相攝威擅勢，
私門成黨，
而公道不行，
故使陳成常、鴟夷子皮得成其難。
使呂氏絕祀而陳氏有國者，
此柔懦所生也。
鄭子陽剛毅而好罰，
其於罰也，
執而无赦。
舍人有折弓者，
畏罪而恐誅，
則因猘狗之驚以殺子陽，
此剛猛之所致也。
