《易》曰：
「著之德圓而神，
卦之德方以智。 」
閒嘗竊取其義，
以概古今之載籍，
撰述欲其圓而神，
記註欲其方以智也。
夫智以藏往，
神以知來，
記註欲往事之不忘，
撰述欲來者之興起，
故記註藏往似智，
而撰述知來擬神也。
藏往欲其賅備無遺，
故體有一定，
而其德為方；
知來欲其決擇去取，
故例不拘常，
而其德為圓。
《周官》三百六十，
天人官曲之故可謂無不備矣。
然諸史皆掌記註，
而未嘗有撰述之官；
祝史命告，未嘗非撰述，然無撰史之人。如《尚書》誓誥，自出史職，至於帝典諸篇，並無應撰之官。則傳世行遠之業，
不可拘於職司，
必待其人而後行；
非聖哲神明，
深知二帝三王精微之極致，
不足以與此。
